Pearsall's A-Z has changed the way we are able to navigate and make sense of our cities.

In 1936 she designed this unique mapping system that enabled a specific location to be found through the use of an index. She abandoned the traditional design of the large fold out map in favour of a book format where each page was a small section of a large-scale map. All of the streets were coded to enable them to be referenced, indexed and searched for.

Her resulting graphic style creates order out of the sprawling modern city, rather representing the physical characteristics of it.
