Journey to the Afterlife

Key Stage 2 Curriculum Link: Unit 10 What can we find out about Ancient Egypt from what has survived?
This trail focuses on our Ancient Egypt collection which is displayed in Treasures. It looks at the death rituals of the Ancient Egyptians using our two mummies, Nesita and Djedmaat and various other objects that are displayed there. It also uses some replica objects and costumes to deliver activities which will be led by our gallery Enablers. The activities where this is the case are clearly indicated on the trail.

It is intended that your class will be split into smaller groups (as many as there are sections of the trail) and will work in these groups to follow the trail. Each group will start and end at a different point in the trail.

Where sections of the trail relate to cases in the gallery these are labelled with the case name. There are notes below for each case giving information about the objects and ideas for further discussion. These can also be used back in school.

A plenary session bringing the whole class together to talk briefly about what they have found out will be useful at the end of the trail, or once back in school.

Offerings for Athena

Key Stage 2 Curriculum Link: Units 14 and 15 Ancient Greeks
This trail focuses on objects and artworks in About art, Treasures and the lobby between the two. The objects in the museum that are Greek mainly relate to various gods and goddesses and groups will be asked to investigate the objects to find out things about these gods and goddesses. The trail also uses replica objects and costumes to deliver mystery activities which will be supervised by our gallery Enablers. These activities are all detailed in the second half of the trail.

The first part of the trail is outside the museum, looking at the building and the features that have been influenced by Ancient Greek architecture. This part of the trail could be done as a whole class as there is plenty of room outside the building to group the class to look.

Key Stage 1 Curriculum Link: Unit 2

It is intended that your class will be split into smaller groups (as many as there are sections) and will work in these groups to follow the trail. Each group will start and end at a different point in the trail.

Each section of the trail relates to a different case within the gallery and is labelled with the case name and a number. There are notes below for each case giving information about the objects and ideas for further discussion. These can also be used back in school.

A plenary session bringing the whole class together to talk briefly about what they have found out and to reinforce simple chronology will be useful at the end of the trail or once back in school.

Toy Story

Key Stage 1 Curriculum Link: Unit 1 - How are our toys different to those of the past?
This trail takes place mainly in Sheffield life and times, with one activity in Treasures. It asks children to look carefully at the various toys on display and to think about what we can tell about them from what they are made of and how they look. There is an opportunity for them to talk about a toy that is special to them. This toy could be drawn at the museum, or back in school.

It is not intended that the trail is followed in order, but your class should be divided into smaller groups, as many as there are sections in the trail. Each group should begin the trail at a different point.

Each section of the trail relates to a different case within each gallery and is labelled with the case name. There are notes below for each case giving information about the objects and ideas for further discussion. These can also be used back in school.

47 Mushroom Lane

Key Stage 2 Curriculum Link: Unit 13 - How has life changed in Britain since 1948?
This trail takes place in Sheffield life and times. It asks children to take a look at all the changes that are illustrated by objects in the museum at Weston Park and record them onto their own timeline.

Although the trail runs chronologically, it is not intended that every pupil will follow the trail in chronological order. After a whole group introduction in front of the Second World War case, the group should be divided into smaller groups (as many as there are sections in the trail) and should follow the trail in rotation, adding to their timeline in the relevant place as they go along. The trail is chronological which means that the cases that groups have to look at are scattered throughout Sheffield life and times and History lab. There is an accompanying trail map to help with navigation.

By the end of the trail they will all have a completed timeline that can then be looked at as part of a plenary, either in the museum or back at school.

Each section of the trail relates to a different case within the display and is labelled with the case name and a number. There are notes below for each case giving information about the objects and ideas for further discussion. These can also be used back in school.
